The ‘first’ time I went to college, I attended Hamline Univ. for 2 years, and then Lewis and Clark College for 1 year. After three years pursuing a degree in Biology, I realized that it was not a good fit for my brain!
In 2007, at age 50, I returned to college, and earned a BA in Liberal Studies at Univ. of Wisc, Whitewater
2012 MDiv from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary
2012-2014 pursued a Master of Theological Studies in Liturgical Studies at Garrett; just have my thesis to write!

Children's Ministry Coordinator 2017-present
Pastor of Racine UMC & Sumner Center UMC 2016-present
My husband, Brad and I have raised 2 sons, Joe and Ben, on our farm near Brownsdale. We enjoy camping and being outdoors. Most importantly spending time with family and friends. God has always been a friend in my life, and I find great joy teaching others of Jesus Christ and guiding them into a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior.
Children’s Ministry has been a wonderful blessing! There is nothing purer and more inspiring than seeing the spark of the Holy Spirit ignite in our little one’s eyes.
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Matthew 19:14
Office Administrator, September 2015-present
Hello, I was born and raised in Rochester. Graduated from MN State University Mankato then worked in mortgage banking for 25 years. My family consists of my husband of 37 years, Jonathan and two mini doxies, Emma Angel & Henry. After living in the Pacific NW for many years, we relocated back home and I became employed at SUMC. What I love most about my job is the variety of duties and the people of the church! I'm a fitness fanatic and especially enjoy hiking, biking and Jazzercise.
Laurie Helmers moved to Stewartville in 1982 and has been associated with SUMC in a variety of ways over the years, primarily as an organist, pianist, choir director and vocalist. She teaches private piano and voice lessons in her home studio. Laurie is deeply involved in theatre throughout the region and across state lines as an actress, director and writer. She enjoys traveling and horseback riding with her husband, John, and son, Myatt. She loves to play scrabble, read historical fiction, put together detailed jigsaw puzzles and do counted cross-stitch.
